Tips for using it

  • Write each trip down the same day; a log rebuilt weeks later is hard to trust.
  • Miles = odometer end minus odometer start. Check the subtraction before you total the page.
  • A business purpose should say who or what the trip was for, not just "work".
  • Note the odometer at the start and end of each month so the total can be checked.

Questions

What should a mileage log include?
The date, where you went, the business purpose and the miles for each trip, plus odometer readings. Ask your tax advisor what your own records need to show.
Is there an Excel version?
Press Download blank as CSV. Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers all open it with the columns ready.
How do I work out the reimbursement?
Multiply the business miles by the rate you pay. Our free mileage reimbursement calculator does it at the IRS standard rate.
